It's getting colder in the UK and twinkly lights have started to emerge in and around street corners, which could only mean one thing...Christmas is coming!! :)
Although I don't celebrate Christmas, its such a beautiful time of the year as the decorations makes everyone feel the festive vibes!
So in the spirit of Christmas, I thought what better time than now to do a review on the classic "Red Lips" and how you can achieve it!
The two products that I will be reviewing today is MAC's Lipstick in a matte finish called 'Ruby Woo' and Lime Crime's matte liquid lipstick in 'Red Velvet'. The names are quite enticing, and it depicts the colour quite nicely.
Both products are of matte finishes and definately quality products.
Lets begin with MAC's infamous red lipstick, Ruby Woo. This lipstick is very well known to pretty much all Make up artists (MUA's) and girls in general. It is their best selling red, alongside Russian Red. MAC is fulled owned by Estee Lauder and is the number one brand for make up. Its a household name, everyone and anyone pretty much knows about MAC. Why shouldn't they be? Their products are amazing and although a tad bit pricey, worth it for the quality. I'm not pro MAC for everything, i.e foundations i prefer to use NARS or Estee Lauder but that is a personal preference. I use MAC foundations on my clients and i find them very good for coverage...(why am I going off topic?)
Packaging:
- The same packaging for all their lipsticks in that range, black with silver shimmer and a bullet like lid. It's their infamous design, even if all the writing has been rubbed off, it will still be identified as a MAC Lipstick.
- It is rich in colour, but more of a subtle orange tone red. It goes on matte but I find this lipstick very very drying. Most MAC products need to be warmed up; i.e rubbed a few times on the skin to warm to the skin temperature and give a smoother application. But even when warm the lipstick is very drying and often makes the lips look chapped.
In order to avoid this, the lips will need to be heavily moisturised before any make up application to allow enough time for the lips to absorb the moisture. Secondly, always used a lip liner with lipsticks to avoid the colour seeping out and to give the lipstick a good base colour to go on to.
Now for the Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Lipstick. I LOVE this product. It is an essential in my make up kit especially as within the Asian community; brides tend to go for red lips often and this is one red that will fit the look and give them that statement look they desire.
Lime Crime isn't as well known as MAC is but this brand is definitely finding itself catching up as in the make up industry many MUA's will have heard about Lime Crime and especially their love for vibrant and unusual colours in their lipstick range. The collection consists of two flattering reds with a velvety texture and matte kiss proof finish. Velvetine applies with the ease of a lip gloss and dries down on the lips completely matte. This is their best selling product alongside the other shade available called Suede Berry which is more of a opaque orangey red.
Packaging:
- It comes in a box, decorated in their infamous lilac and red colours. I think the packaging is very cute and different as their take on the brand is of a unicorn...how cute it that?
- It also comes in a lip gloss like package, with a glass like container and a sponge applicator
- The texture of the product starts off as a lip gloss and it goes on with the ease of a lip gloss.
- It dries completely matte and it is waterproof. Drying takes a few minutes and the finish is quite desirable.
- It isn't as drying and doesn't make your lips look chapped as the Ruby Woo does, although after a few hours it may feel a little dry (however, this is the purpose of a matte lipstick, it will look dryish and matte).
- This stuff does what it says! It is long lasting and long wearing, it takes a lot to get the lipstick to budge, compared to the Ruby Woo which gives way with one swipe, Red Velvet takes a lot more to get it off.
When applying this lipstick be very careful when applying to the outer corner's of your lips as it can get messy if you start wiping and smudging, let the applicator do the job or use a lip brush to get the outline of our lips done nicely.
Below are swatches of both the colours; the first colour from the left is Ruby Woo and the second is Red Velvet. The first picture will demonstrate the colours when it first goes on and the second picture demonstrates the colours once it fully dries.
I end this blog in conclusion that i am team #LimeCrime (Y)
